Im 14 and have wanted to be an equine vet ever since I was five
Well, is there anything I should know? Any equine vets here?
I used to ride, and I'm getting back in it. I love horses.. and all animals. But I don't just want to be a vet, i want to be an equine vet.
So any early advice while I'm 14 that i should know??
thank you!
Answers:Stay involved with horses if you can, make connections at an early age if you ride at a stable talk to the farrier or the vet that comes out to visit develop a relationship with them. In the meantime concentrate on your schooling. Its important to do EXCELLENT in your math and sciences during your high school years. Study hard for your ACT and SAT tests and your Sophmore and Junior start researching schools with good veterinary programs, one of the best is the Ohio State University. Go on college visits and apply to several schools at the end of your junior year. After you get into the college you want work your butt off through your first four years then apply to the school of veterinary medicine for another four years or so. There you can talk to your professors about specializing in large animal, specifically equine medicine. You could also go the route of going to a horse school that offers equine medicine and other related majors. Check out this Yahoo group dedicated to people wanting careers with horses there a big list of horse colleges and the majors they offer. http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/horse...
The main thing you want to work on is your grades, if you cant be out there riding all the time get on line read about horses I know it cost a lot of money to ride and keep horses thats why I had to stop riding but I never stopped loving them and Im finally getting back into and pursuing a career as a vet technician specialing in large animal practice and more sepcifially horses. For now dont overwhelm yourself with these huge descions just work on the grades and worry about the near future.
Research. Talk to vets, and see if you can ask an equine vet about it. Hope your dedicated, and have AMAZING grades, you'll need it.
just work with horses a lot. no advice can substitute for experience. i have been riding for 10 years now, and i can argue whatever people say with knowledge that im right because of that.
to be an equine vet you have to go to vet school. in vet school you learn about dogs, cats, cattle, swine and horses regardless of what you plan to work with.
