I'm 5'4 and my favorite riding mare is 14.1
I also have a 13.3 mare I've ridden in the past, and I'm having a 14.1 gelding trained this summer.
I have a confession. I'm not as thin as my avatar...(LOL)
I prefer a short, stocky horse with good, heavy bone. Everyone saying your weight is a bigger factor as far as the horse goes is right. But even if you're a little overweight, you don't have to have a tall horse. Bone structure and condition are more important (relatively) than height in that case.
Another advantage to smaller horses is they aren't near as intimidating to your beginner friends you may want to take riding with you sometime.
The size of the horse doesn't matter, it's what your comfortable riding on and the horses disposition.
14 hands is good for a girl your size. My dad rode a horse that was 15 hands, But that was too small for him. He's 6'2. Im 5'8 and he was perfect for me. Alot has to do with what you want to do with the horse though. Barrel racing or pole bending might require a horse with more power and speed than the one you picked out. I'd look into it.
no your fine i could understand if it was a shetland pony wich is very small
unless you are severely overweight, you are not too big for your horse. I am 20 and 5'4 and I still ride and train a 19 yo 13'3hh pony and a 7 yo 14'1hh pony.
Certain show circles may say so but for a riding horse, one that you enjoy, size is not a factor. Did you know that a lot of cutting horses, with bigger men riding them, are only in the 14's and is their preference?
no thats completalty fine as long as you are comfortable. a yes if this is the right horse you can still jump and barrel race a pole bend i have a horse no larger than 15 hands that can run 19.2's in poles
get a 14-14.2 because if you grow you'll want that little extra height to keep your legs comfortable in the saddle and not too much hard work for the poor horse.
I would say that if you are comfortable and if your legs don't hang below the horses stomach than you are good to go. But to be safe would buy a horse a little bigger like 14'3. So if you grow you won't out grow your pony.
the size of you horse is your personal preference. My horse is 16 hands and I am 5'4". I would not be able to get on him but he has been trained to stretch out so that height is not a problem here, and this is my favorite horse to ride out of the 7 that my family has.
I think it would depend on your weight and how small you looked. Some people ride ponies and look HUGE, but really they aren't that big off the horse. I think the horse is a pretty good size for you. Im 5"3 and I have a 15.3 HH Quarter Horse Paint.
That is fine. You will be OK!! I am 5'5 & I have a Mustang that is 14.2hh. You'll be fine!!
No its not to small. I had a pony about that size and I didnt end up selling him till i was about 5' 6' aprox. I dont think that size is a big deal unless its to difficult for the horse and in your case it doesnt sound like it is so go for it. try the horse out, Ride him/her and see whatchya think. Best o luck
no. im 5'9" and one of my horses is 14.2-14.3hh my mom is 5'8" and her mare is around 14.1hh. depedning on your weight though. im assuming you are under 135.
