Watch other riders in your class and see how they do. See what you need to improve and focus on it while in the practice ring.
As for the refusing.it is extremely frustraiting to go to a show and get constant refusals.(been there done that :( ) But once you step foot into that show ring you have to KNOW that he is going over the fences. If you think he is going to refuse he will refuse, especially if you start fighting with him before you set up for the jump.

have some confidence in yourself, its not about your ability its what the judge is looking for as every judge is differnt and if its a stable show dont worry about it, just remeber the basics.
