These horses won't know anything about trotting correctly, framing up, collecting, or using themselves by engaging their hocks. They need someone who can slowly start to teach them. They need a pro who won't grab their face and try to muscle their heads down. They need someone forgiving and patient, someone with experience and infinite time. Given the right time, attitude, and environment, OTTBs can go on to stellar careers in a variety of disciplines. But you should be honest with yourself and assess your own abilities. Have you been working with horses for years? Have you ever trained a horse before or helped train one? Do you have any experience with OTTBs? What are your riding abilities? These horses know very little, so they require a rider that knows a lot. If that's you, great. If not, you can still adopt one, but make sure you hire a pro that has experience with these horses.

I'm a huge fan of OTTBs. There's something about a nice TB hunter that always makes me sit up and take notice. I've worked with countless TBs and I find them all to be athletic with lots of intelligence. They get a reputation for hotness, but most settle down really well when they're given enough time off after the track. But I'm the first to admit that certain people shouldn't work with these horses. They need a sensitive, patient, and knowledgeable trainer if they're to go onto success after the track.

Yes! They can. But you have to consider that retraining ex racehorses is hard, frustrating and requires A LOT of time and experience.
