You might want a safe, enclosed area to train it, but if you dont know what u need you might want to seek the help of an instructor or trainer.

If you cant afford one, some barns that have riding instructors will do a working student program, where you work off the $.

Good Luck

absolutely! our retired horse was sent off to a slaughter house before we rescued him. now im jumping him 4 foot and he also makes an awesome trail horse. you need patience and a trainer. there is no way your going to get a hot horse to calm down without a trainers help.
Yes you can retrain a race horse. I would recomend finding a horse trainer.

However, I would consider getting something else first. Besides training problems, ex race horses are notorious for lameness issues. Running on a track is incredibly hard on a horses legs and usually results in moderate to severe arthritis by the time they are five. OCD (small fractures resulting in bone fragments), stress fractures, tendon and ligament problems are also very common.

So besides the work of retraining - and that can be very hard work - there is the possibility of finacial sorrows over healthcare. If you are starting out in horses I would strongly recomend something else - anything else.

Some can. But it is very hard because pleasure horses are suppose to be mellow with a lower head set. OTTB's are pretty high strung sometimes and have A LOT of energy. Thats why they are usually used for jumping. But if you spend enough time, I think they would make a pleasure horse because of their nice floaty stride. Im not saying you shouldnt do it, but if I was you Id give it a shot.
Bear in mind that with an ex race horse you're getting a horse that was broken two years too soon, they are well known for having a bad back and their riding lifespan is not as long as a normal horse.
