Im thinking of buying a x race horse can they be retrained for riding pleasureand what do i need to
It is true some of them can be spooky or hot, some can be hard mouthed, but they can be softened up through proper riding/training. Most times you can NOT ride one of these horses before you purchase it if it is on the track, so it is not an undertaking for the inexperienced. I am lucky to know people in the industry and have gotten some wonderful horses that I had already worked with.
If you get one right off the track, it is of great benefit to them to give them some time off to be a horse and get rid of any soreness they may have. Many will just be bodysore from working hard, and just need a little vacation time. Do make sure you get any horse thoroughly vetted, because racing can give them injuries that can severely limit their future careers. A lot of the time they will lose weight/muscling when they come off the track because they are losing their racing-fit muscles, but it will come back with a good feeding program and when brought back into work. Contrary to popular belief, many racehorses DO get time off and get to hang out in a pasture every year for a while...most trainers know it is good for the horses mental and physical health. Also, many are a bit "up" from the large amounts of feed and sometimes drugs that they are on at the track, and this changes after they have been off for a while. A lot of the time they can be a much different horse when their living situation changes, most of them mellow out a great deal.
I love exracers, but they are not for everyone, especially not the inexperienced. Please check out www.exracers.com , go to the "forums" and there are lots of people that can answer just about any question you may have. Also feel free to e-mail me if you have questions. It's my name plus @yahoo.com
Well alot of good points have been made. I owned a retired race that I did Western Pleasure with. I raced at local fairs and have severl trophies from the track... I also have several trophies from him in the Western Pleasure arena. It really is the horse. Get one with a nice gentle demeaner that likes to ride with a low head carriage and not act "hot".
