Im wondering why people stll use tom-thumbs2007-11-24 21:17:41

i don't mean to be rude, but tom-thumbs should olny be used for door stops or ordaments. don't people know they pinch the horses cheek?

Hi! Most non-horse educated people use the Tom Thumb because of a huge marketing campaign that made it look like the "wonder" bit. IT IS NOT!! There are three types and the English version is the worse as it hits the roof of the horses mouth and distracts him from his job. If you remember in history, Tom Thumb was a very small man. Why put a small bit in a horses mouth that pinches and causes him discomfort? They should all be thrown in the garbage. All this does is hurt the horse because the owner is frightened of losing control of the horse. A good relationship between the horse and owner makes this an absurd practice. If I tried to put one of these in my horse's mouth I would expect him to stomp on my foot and make me get some sense of sanity. Maybe a good kick in the butt would be deserving as well. You are right. They are a terrible bit and of course fashioned by a man that had no clue. Anyone that uses these needs to have one put in their mouth and a saddle on their back and see how they like it. If you have any other questions, please ask. Marie.

if you use them correctly, there is nothing wrong with useing a tom thumb.When I ride my horse in them, I hardly even touch the bit, my horse moves off the feeling of the rein on his neck and if i sit back my horse stops. Of course it is not a good idea to hold contact on a tom thumb, or any type of western shanked bit, that would hurt the horses mouth.
