I have had a few horses that only go in tom thumbs, any type of port bit would make them throw their head up.
I"m sorry, but you are incorrect. If you have a tom thumb that is pinching, then it must be 100 years old. All modern tom thumb bits have the new swivel cheeks that don't pinch. Even antique snaffle bits were made so crudely, that they would pinch.
There are some bits that barrel racers use on their horses that can squeeze skin. These are called sliding gag bits, and rubber bit guards are used with these bits to prevent pinching.
Go to www.kbrhorse.net/tra/bits01.ht... and it may help you understand bits better. :^)
hmmm, you must be very unexperienced I ride all my youngins in a Tom Thumb and NEVER had a problem. Which bit do you advise then? Would you like me to stick a wire bit in a 2yr olds mouth? A Tom Thumb is the same as a snaffle in english.
Tom Thumbs do not pinch the horse's cheeks. It may not be the best bit in the world, but I've known many horses who go wonderfully in a tom thumb.
I tried several different bits on my mare and the only one she ever liked was a tom thumb (she didn't try evade it and didn't act annoyed by it like she did with any other bit whether it was a snaffle or a pelham). I also used it for a short time on my pony as a transition between a snaffle and a curb, and he never reacted negatively to it.
