For centuries its primary role was as a War Horse (its original name). It has also been known as the Great Horse and the Strong Horse.

A mature stallion can stand up to 18 hands (1.83 metres) high and weigh up to 1000 kilograms, with mares and geldings generally being less massive.

Most draft horses are pretty big, tall AND beefy. Throughout the years, different breeds have held the record, the Clydesdale, the Shire, the Percheron and the Belgian have all held the Guinness World book record, all topping out at over 19 hh. However, on average, all 4 breeds tend to run anywhere from 16 hh to 18 hh on average and weigh 1400 to 2000 lbs, so think about what you want your big horse to do. All drafts are pretty mellow, and are called cold blood breeds because their muscles are a slower twitch type muscle, as opposed to a warm blood (Quarterhorse, various European breeds, and various draft crosses) or hot blood (Arabian, Andalusian) that has a faster muscle twitch response. It's sort of like the difference between a heavy duty pick up and a Ferrari, LOL! One's torqued for power, the other speed. My half drafts are very gentle, and not prone to spooking.

Clydesdales and Shires at one time shared a lot of ancestors. They look a lot alike, and have beautiful feathers on their lower legs. They come in black or red with white trim on their legs and faces. Belgians are red, but will have flaxen manes and tails, very pretty, but their feet aren't as hairy. Percherons come in black or grey (white) and are not supposed to have any white trim at all. Also, they do not have feathery feet. Percherons also have more Arabian blood, and are the liveliest of the drafts.
