Impatient horse
I Take My 10 year old gelding to shows.
Whenever he sees one of the horses he knows go by, other horses get fed or get oats before him , or he is tied up and noone is with him he gets impatient and starts making alot of noise and stamping his feet.
What can i do to stop this?
Answers:Brittany W: Hi!
How long have you owned your gelding and is this something new or has he always done this? I ask since it will better aid us answerers in trying to give you advice.
I don't in any way think it is a good idea to give your horse treats. The majority of people with extensive horse training experience will tell you the same thing. No matter how well he starts to behave, treats are a "no-no鈥?because horses will develop bad manners when treats are used as a problem fixer to aid already trained horses. It might be okay to utilize treats in gentling or halter breaking and the like but its best to avoid them as training aids in already trained horses since horses can permanently learn to association treats with a good job and then eventually they learn that they can get a treat for anything they do. Avoid them! Especially since your horse already gets anxious when he sees other horses being fed.
What I recommend, is to grab a good hold on his lead and give it a hard jerk and tell him "No". It will not work with just one try, so you will need to keep doing it when he acts up in order to get him to understand that you do not appreciate his behavior. Knowing when to release pressure is the key to not making him upset. Jerk on the line, and as soon as he feels the pressure on his poll and nose he will bring his head up high and stop his behavior, the second he starts to raise his head release any kind of extra pressure that you may be exerting on the lead but still take care to have the lead firmly in hand. Really exert confidence in your voice and make sure he knows you mean business by staring directly at him. Make sure that you give him a hard jerk with your body to his side.
