ok im learning to barrel race and for me i was tought to do the rise thing but now that i need to sit in my saddle its kinda hard.any tips on staying in the saddle.

I was always taught to sit in the saddle like u stand on the ground. Legs, shoulder waist should all be aligned. Keep u鈥檙 back straight and grip with u鈥檙 thighs.

grab your saddle horn and push yourself down... I have to do this when I am cutting and it helps a ton!

Squeeze with your knees, heels down and sit deep into that saddle.

One thing that might help is while you are cantering or trotting, hold on to the back of the saddle. That will give you a feel for how you need to be.

I think of ice cream melting. I picture my rear melting into the saddle and it usually helps me sit deeper.

Make things easy for yourself and get a saddle designed for barrel racing. The seat itself and the way the fenders hang will make it much easier to keep the proper position, and the special horn is better to grip. The way you hold the horn in racing is different than a cutter would, so have a seasoned barrel racer help you with the best way. Don't hold the cantle of the saddle, as one post suggested. That will throw off your balance, plus you need both hands in front of you, one for the reins and one for the horn.
