I had a horse that could belch. Long, alphabet pronouncing things. He could also voluntarily hold his breath and turn blue/pass out depending on his degree of personal outrage at life. Horses can back out of halters that are tight, open the trickiest gates, drink grape pop, eat pizza or fries, sleep while being rode, develope claustrophia in trailers and prefer to haul backwards, stick out their tongues at will, stand only on toes in sandals, LOVE watermelon rinds, will stand in the sun on the dirt rather than in the shade where there's wonderful grass, flirt with themselves in mirrors, make their own booze by dribbling their feed into their waterbucket. They are notoriously bigoted against horses of colors they don't like, love goats and cats and chickens, I had one horse who hated cats with a passion and would fling them if he could get a grip on one-used to use him to cut kitties in the arena [no cats were harmed in this game, just delayed from pooping momentarily]. They can be put in a blanket at night, be naked in the morning, unwrap their bandages, lead other horses around by their bridles/halters/blankets or other paraphernalia. Dump hoofblack on your head, spit dewormer over your shirt, clean up a pile of sweetfeed and leave 10 tiny pill bits at the bottom of the bucket, pull off their own shoes on the field fence, babysit foals for no reason, give hugs and kisses, tolerate small children, run away with husbands, casually step away from the fence just as you go to settle on their bare back so you land butt first on the ground. Pull posts out of the ground they are tied to, fence rails, tie rings, or just back out of their head gear as previously mentioned if all else fails, to stand 2 feet away doing nothing. They enjoy gettting loose at shows and acting like the Black Stallion, plopping you in mud puddles, scraping you off on any available object, suddenly stopping to graze/check out anything foreign. Like that clump of grass. You already know about alll the good stuff, right? They make great shrinks, best friends, and partners in adventure. They encourage us to keep trying, learn more, be responsible, love without reason.
