Injured suspensory ligament

Injured suspensory ligament2007-11-24 21:17:47

Went out last night to feed and my little arab was limping! I am thinking he stepped in a hole and injured his right rear suspensory ligament (?). He must have done it on his way up to eat because after about 20 min he limped less but it got slightly swollen and hot. I ran cold water on it for about 15 minutes last night and this morning. Seems to be doing better today.

Anyone else have a horse who has done this? What did you do? Wrap it? Brace or Ace type wrap?

Please don't tell me to go to the vet, it isnt that bad he is just a little tender. I just want to make him comfortable and ensure a good recovery. If he gets worse I will take him in but for now I am looking for advice from those with experiece. Thanks!

I think you are right and probably do not need a vet (being your experience with horses).

I have had injurys like this and worse. From the sound of it I would say he will be ok.

It is VERY unfortunate that you can not contain him somehow. You just have one other horse right? a TB? Can you make a small pen with a divider, and pen them both up- just until your Arab feels better? Or maybe I'm mistaken and there are more horses...Anyway, regaurdless I would rap it. Preferably a quilt rap and stable bandage. If it is swollen a good bit, then I would use a dmso & furazone rap under the bandage (change out daily). Keep up the hydrotheropy, and possibly some cold compresses if the heat persists.

Hope he feels better & good luck!
