Is a 14 year old horse to old to saddle break
Im gettibg a 14 yr old quarter horse from a family member and shes never been rode in her life... would she be to old to saddle break and ride?
Answers:If the horse is healthy, there is no reason why you can't do this. Take it SLOW and EASY. Get her used to a bit and make her bridle-wise from the ground. Please don't "cowboy" her. Lead her around with a saddle on her. When you see it doesn't bother her, lean over the saddle. When that doesn't bother her, get on and have someone lead you for a while.
Best wishes. Enjoy your horse.
Seventeen is NOT an OLD horse. I see many horses show until they are 25 years old. Just take it easy so she will not make any habits that you don't want her to have. Do NOT ride her hard at first. Do short lessons and lengthen them a little every few days to condition her, especially in extreme weather conditions.
i would think so. it may cause alot of stress. but your best to ask a vet or someone who has dealt with this before
I dont see why you couldnt do it, as long as the horse is healthy.
Horses are never too old to break to ride. It will just take longer because she is older and more set in her ways. You will have to be more patient with her as she will be more resistant to change and learning new things. But if you are consistent with her training she will be able to be ridden.
she isnt to old to break. at the rannch i work at we have horses in there 20's some just now being truly broken. or are still in there training. you just have to be more repetative with a older horse then a younger, because she's had so many years not worring about people on her back. though she (or he) may look forward to some work. but no it isnt to old in the least.
I don't see why you couldn't break it - Might take a little more attention and dedication to change it's ways!
It would not be impossible to break a 14 year old, but you are introducing new challenges because of the age. You should not do this yourself. Contact a professional trainer, and with a few months work you will likely have a great saddle horse!
No it is not to old to for her to start under saddle. It is just like teaching a 14 year old horse to do anything new. This is just something new. It actually is just like any other age...takes lots of patience, and perseverance. But it won't hurt her in anyway and she is not too old.
