Is a 162 hh horse to big for a first time owner2007-11-24 21:17:49

I want this beautiful 16.22 hh horse but i dont know if i need that big of size.. I know that is a big horse but he is very gentle and loves kids, i am 5 ft 1in. and this will be my first horse, i am 13 years old.

The better question is can you handle him? Is he well trained? Have you handled him on your own? If so how did you do? Have you riden him? How did that go? Are you able to get on and off of him without help? The size of him doesn't really matter as much as his temperment and training and your ability. Best wishes!

Well, I am 5' and used to ride a 17 hand horse - not the easiest thing in the world to get up on - particularly since this one wouldn't stand near a fence or step so I could climb up - but it depends more on the temperament of the horse than the size as to whether you can ride him.

You would really be better off with a somewhat smaller, but sweet natured horse.

It really isn't the horses size that matters, it is temperament and the training that it as well as you have had. My first horse was almost 17 hands and had never been trained but she was sweet and gentle and we learned together so. If this horse is gentle, not high-spirited and does not need an experienced rider, I'd say go for it. -Scarlet

If this horse is trained in the discipline of your choice and is sound and a good price, then go for it. It is really a matter of personal preference. I am 5 feet even, but also 45 years old (!), so 16.2hh is waayyyy out of reach for me. You, on the other hand, are young and flexible, so it will be easier for you to mount. Just remember that if you are out on the trail, you will need to find a big log, stump, rock, etc., to help you mount up.

can you get on & off easily? that is the question..i'm a little taller than you but, when i'm in good shape, horse height is no problem.
