Is a red line-backed dun a rare color for a horse coat2007-11-24 21:17:51
I have a red line-backed dun, year and half filly and I was just wondering if her color is rare
She is extremely pretty and has a black mane and tail with red and blonde highlights throughout them.
Answers:No I would not call it rare, they are all over. I don't think people are shooting for the red dun as much as they used too though, duns and buckskins seem to be more prevalent today over the reds.
actually yes that is rare. never seen that particular combo and i've seen a lot of colorations. what breed is she?
Yeah, i think it is rare. I have seen it before, though. They are gorgeous!
No, red duns are not rare, especially in QHs. But if she has a black mane and tail, she is NOT a red dun. Red duns are a result of the dun gene on the red(chestnut) gene, and chestnuts(nor red duns) can have black points(mane, tail, ear tips, muzzle, legs). It makes the color a little washed out looking...not so red as a chestnut. What color are her parents?(It should say on her papers, or can be found out through a pedigree search) If she doesn't have one dun parent then she is not dun. Dun is a dominant gene, meaning that to get a dun foal, at least one parent MUST be dun(just like grey). Also, a lot of horses have what people call a "line back"...it is simply that the dorsal line of the horse is darker than the rest of the coat. It is very common in many colors including bay and chestnut, so many people "think" they have a dun horse when they actually don't.
No, red dun isn't rare in QHs. I agree with hhqh.the buckskins and duns are just more popular than the reds right now.
Wow, you have a one of a kind horse! I have never in my life seen or even heard of a horse color like that which you are describing! I want one! Can I borrow her sire and dam? LOL! But seriously. Yes that color is rare. Must be a pretty little girl. Also, the fact that she is a Quarter horse makes her very much so versatile. Are you aware of all that she can do? She can race, she can show, she can jump, she can do dressage and trail rides, she could make an award winning barreler or do pleasure in both western and english. She could do almost any discipline in either western or english. I myself prefer western riding and trail riding, but I do like jumping and showing. And guess what? My bff has a black quarter horse/ thoroughbred mix from nebraska names Chance for Sugar. Her horse was accidentally mated with a quarter horse named Zippy's Dandy aka Dandy when he got out of the stud pen. And Sugar had a filly that is aproximately two months two weeks old now, a bay. She is my goddaughter. And she is going to be a great show horse! Youll remember I said showing was the only english discipline I liked besides jumping.
