is a stallion that is 22 years old and never used for breeding to old,

Answers:

Well, not necessarily as long as he is in good health. But, the more important question is why would a 22 y/o still be a stallion if he has never been used for breeding? Seems like a quality stallion that had something to offer his breed would have been used by now or gelded if he wasn't of good quality. If you are looking for something to breed to, I would go to a stallion that has proven offspring and is a good complement to my mare.

normaly it really depends on what your breeding him for and with if its just because then no but if you want any money the bloodlines have to be great and its not something you can just start
There are plenty of well aged stallions that are still actively used for breeding. If this stallion is some quality horse, then you would think he'd have been bred before. Very strange to keep a stallion around for 22 years and never breed him ..

Have a vet that does reproduction work do a semen analysis. The horse will need to be collected, and it can be determined if he is fertile. At that age, I would imagine you would want to pursue artificial means of collecting & inseminating.

Live cover is still an option - but usually a horse has a lot more experience before he reaches that age. Given this one's age, I would think A.I. would be the way to go with him. And you could freeze the semen, too - in the event that he passes on, you could still breed him.

He could be used for breeding if he had a high enough sperm count and they had good motility. However, one of the things that often happens with older stallions is that they find great difficulty with the mounting. While AI is an option as you can alter the height of the dummy for his comfort and from one collection you can breed several mares, live cover would probably be easier because you are not going to have to train him to do what comes naturally. Some stallions need a bit a work to get the idea of the dummy etc.
an average horse only lives 24 years in captivity! that horse is way too old
as a stallion ages his semen count will decline. your best bet is to have the semen checked to see how viable it is before you breed. also make sure the horse/stallion is in good overall health too if never been bred before. good luck and hope this helps
no i have a 30 yo stallion that still produces champion babies
No not really, if he is broke to ride you can still ride him like any other horse. If not, then he can be a pasture puppy and live his life out in retirement.
If that stallion is in good condition and healthy then no hes not too old! the only problem would be the mare may not take the first few times if he has never bred before!
Not if he is in good health and has a good sperm count.
