Is a standardbreed horse suitable for beginners with no experience
I have had very little experiece with horses. I have been offered a standardbreed horse thats 3 years old.. Should I take it?
Answers:Assess the individual horse. And is it a STANDARDbred or a SADDLEbred? some folks get the two confused.
I learned to ride on a standardbred gelding. you really had to coax him to get him to "go". He would practically fall asleep if you let him. In otherwords, every horse is different. If the horse is a trotter, the ride could be a little bouncey.
For a beginner, it just all depends on the training the horse had prior. Some horses are very steady at 3 and some are still very green. As a beginner, you do not want a very green horse unless you have someone willing to work with you (a green horse is saddlebroken and accepts a rider easily, you can get them to walk/trot etc, with you, but at times they might be a little rough around the edges and in your riding lessons the horse is being instructed as much as you are)
If the horse has a good temperment, and it has enough training for you to be able to feel confident about riding, then i might give a go. But if it was an ideal situation the horse would have more experience.
I have no idea what the circumstances are here - about the horse being offered to you. Will taking on the horse save it from a bad situation or does someone who have a horse just curious if you are looking.
Now the other consideration is not just about riding, is do you know anything about horses at all? If you know very little about their care - board at a stable that offers full board - they turn out, feed, water, etc, a horse and do everything but groom and ride it.
good starting horse go for it
It depends on individual temperment. Spend some time with the horse before making a decision, and see if you and/or a friend can take her for a short ride.
You should take whichever breed but it has to have had it's basic training. It's not about the breed but the amount of training it has had.
Generally speaking, "Green (owner) plus Green (horse) equals Black and Blue.
