Is an Albino Friesian more valuable and how much
Is an albino Friesian horse more valuable than your average black? And what about grey Friesians...I thought they were supposed to be all black? I understand about the Albino mutation, but the grey? Is it a legite color or can it be faulted for being grey?
Thank for the info in advance.the more info I get on this the happier I will probably be.
Answers:Albinism is a genetic mutation that occurs in ALL spieces, including horses. Delta dawn doesn't know what she is talking about. I have personally known some PEOPLE who were true albinos and had pink eyes, skin, and white hair. ( I had a classmate in college who was very fair skinned and who had blond hair which had a tendency to go white in the summer. It turned out that one of her parents, her mother, in fact, was an albino, so I know that this can happen with people. ) As to whether or not your Friesian is valuable, I can't really say. He is unusual, that's certain. If the studbook and breed standard will only accept black, then you may be stuck if you try to register him. Albinism is perfectly legitimate as a color- especially if you are talking about the true genetic mutation, and NOT the color breed, which are horses who are white but have dark skin and dark eyes. Gray horses are almost always born black, as I am sure you know, and turn gray and white as they age and mature. There are any number of breeds where this is common, but I haven't heard of it in a Friesian before. This is certainly interesting to think about. Good luck with your horse.
