Is clipping shetland ponies a do or a dont We have a shetland pony and he has an extremely long coat
I live in Australia, so it doesn't get insanely cold of course. It does get very hot in summer, so i feel sorry for him with his thick coat. He's 8 or 9 years old now and he's black, he's very quiet but he doesn't get ridden anymore because everyone has grown out of him. Thanks..xoxo
Answers:you can clip him, just not so short it won't grow back right for winter and make sure it's not so short he gets sunburn if his skin is pinker then it is black, i'm not exactly sure which it is with SP's, but I';m thinking such a hearty pony would have darker skin to procet him against the sun...
but if it;s not to shortly clipped then you don't have anything to worry about anyways, just make sure if you have bugs that bite you keep him fly sprayed so the bugs don't attack his newly uncovered skin..
YEAH just clip him! the only time it matter when clipping is if you are showing. my old mare had a very thick coat all year round and so a full clipped her all year!
i think it just depends on the horse and by the sounds of it. he could do with a trim up!!
he will be fine and if it does get chilly then just stick a thin rug on at night!! they are hardy little things!
There is nothing wrong with clipping your shetland pony, just don't do it too short as he could sunburn if he doesn't have enough of a coat to protect him from the sun.
By all means, clip him.
