Should I add garlic to my horses feed so that she secrets the scent and the flys stay away? I read it online. How much do I add?
Thanks
Answers:garlic does work as flies and midges don't like the smell the horse secretes.
you need to have been feeding the garlic at least for a month to have any effect against flies.
naff feed stuff,do a garlic product and you should be adding two small scoops that come with it twice a day in feed.check out your local feed merchant, the garlic can be purchased in granules ,powder, capsules ,and even as garlic treats, the garlic granules i find are better than the powder as it mixes better with feed.the powder is chalky and my horses would not touch it
ohhhhhhh Yeah!!!! It really really works!!
Garlic has been a long time feed additive. I would go with a commercially prepared garlic additive. It would be cheaper than using human grade food and the "dose" would be already figured out for you. A number of my boarders used garlic as a fly repellant and had good results. The barn will smell of garlic though.
Why not try a fly spray that works! I wouldnt put anything in my horses feed that dosnt belong there.
I have used garlic for the past few years. It helps but does not keep everything away. I get the best results from fresh garlic, not the powdered kind. They sell chopped garlic in jars, get the largest size you can find. I give two tablespoons per horse twice a day. Garlic will also work as a natural wormer, so that is another plus. Just don't expect them to eat it for the first day or two.
Good Luck!
I have a horse with allergies to no-see-ums. We had her on powdered garlic for months. It didn't seem to help and she had garlic breath.
yes, garlic works internally. sprinkling a little bit of garlic powder in the stall also helps to repel flies in the stalls. :)
