Is gelding a stallion late, dangerous2007-11-24 21:17:54

I knew a guy who had a stunning Welsh cob stallion and had him gelded when he was around 8 YEARS OLD, because he wanted him 'controllable' for his daughter to ride.

The horse died soon afterwards and it was to do with the gelding. (Not infection/other).

I've heard of other horses dying after being gelded late why is it to do with the age?

Answers:

I have known MANY horses that were gelded late and never knew a one that died because of it.

The most shocking was a world champion (6 times) a lady bought for her granddaughter to show, but rules would not let a 12 year old show a stallion, so they gelded him at 19 years old. He had been a show horse since 2 and a breeding stallion since 4. He was a very gentle stallion.

It didn't bother him at all. He went on to win two more world championships (in Juvenile classes) and showed until he was 26 years old. He absolutely adored that girl and was her best bud until she helped him over the bridge at 33 years old.

I can see that many people here may have owned only one horse or maybe just read about them. (we've had over 500 in 43 years...77 at one time) Some stallions are dangerous, YES, but you never "generalize" with a horse of anykind. SOME people are dangerous too, so don't blame all people or ALL stallions. Our present stallion is as docile as a puppy!

Best wishes

Ive never heard of death due to late gelding. I know of someone who had their horse gelded at 2 and he died a day later, though it was never clear why. I dont really think it has to do with age...Maybe its to do with the body going into shock?
