A 'hoof' is the large 'toenail' on the foot of the horse...blacksmiths put 'shoes' on them so that they don't chip off and hurt the horse. (He'll go lame) They need to be cut, and filed- like your fingernails and toenails hopefully are.

No longer, it was a while ago, but they now make it without horse hooves. A horse's hoof would be their feet. The reason they used it to make glue was because hooves are like our finger and toe nails but much thicker. It was the gelatin in the hoof that they used. I just heard about not using the hooves for glue on some show on The Discovery Channel or Animal Planet talking about myths and truths. Have a good one;^)

Glue can be made out of any type of hooves - horse, cow, deer, etc. It is usually a mix of hooves, sinew, and animal hide. Although I don't think that many commercial glues still use hooves as a main ingredient nowadays.
