We had a late frost that wiped out first cut. Drought reduced second cut, and lots of folks are praying for third...

Many people who don't keep a "reserve" are in a pinch. I've been telling people to use beet pulp and complete feeds, like Kent's Royal Pride, for instance, to reduce their hay demand. It isn't the optimum but it sure beats starving horses. Start buying extra NOW if you have the proper storage capabilities, as it is possible price will raise as demand does this winter.

What are some other complete feeds and methods to help people who may be struggling to get their hay in this year?

Answers:

I have lived in a drought stricken area now for 7 yrs I think.

One year we had our hay shipped in and it was junk. So moldy that I don't think cows would touch it.

Another year, we did alfalfa cubes and pellets.

I think if I ever got into a bind again, I would do the cubes and then a compete feed that packers use.

Equine senior is a complete feed but would be really pricey to feed a herd. But in a bind, it will work.

Luckily I think I'm ok this year, we have had rain yayyyyyy, but I do know what your going through and its not fun.

I'm in SE Wisconsin, and most of us are overloaded w/ hay...we still have round bales from last year, and are trying to find room for all the square bales that we did for first and second.looks like a 3rd cutting will definitely be done this year as well... so if anyone is close to this area, lots of farmers have extras that they might be willing to sell...Good luck to you..

Hay is very scarce in this area, We didnt have a 2nd cutting becuase it has been so dry! We might get a 3rd cutting, I hope.
