Is it dead
On our way home, we pass a small field of horses, and a few weeks ago, my sisters and I saw a grey horse lying on its side. It wasn't evening moving. My Mom said it was sleeping but it wasn't laying its legs like you normally see. Everytime we pass that field, I look for the horse but I never see it. Is it dead?
Answers:First of all, there is no truth to this idea that horses always sleep standing up. Our horses lie down and sleep all the time ( I live on a farm where there are 11 of them at the moment) and NO, it doesn't mean they are dead !! It's entirely possible, however, that YOU did see a horse that was either very old or very ill, or both, and the animal MAY HAVE died. One way to tell would have been if there were no other horses around where that horse was lying. Horses can sense death, even though they, like humans, cannot understand it. When a horse dies in a field like that one most likely did, then the other horses will all know that this is not just a sleeping horse. They can sense that a change has taken place which warns them to keep away and shun that particular area.
If the horse did die, then the reason you never see it is because I am certain that the owners disposed of the carcass by either burying it or sending it to a rendering plant to be turned into glue or leather. If the horse was a special pet of someone in the family, then it may have been creamated, just like what happens with some people when they die. Hope this answers your question.
basically yeah
Probably not. Horses, like dogs and cats, also sleep lying on their sides. If a horse is comfortable in it's surroundings and feels safe, that's how it sleeps.
