Is it illegal to use a uxeter or standard kimberwick bit in open show classes2007-11-24 21:17:58

Im entering an open show on thursady and I want to know if i will be allowed to use those sorts of bits. I plan on entering costume class, barrels, flags, and western pleasure.

Answers:

Ask what rule book the show will follow and check in the book. I show both Open and Paint shows, in both of those shows I can use a kimberwick of either sort in English classes. Neither bit is allowed in most Western classes, there is always a set of rules in associations (APHA, AQHA, CEF) which states what sort of bit can be used in which classes.

Most shows, even Open shows, insist on a leverage bit and the horse being riden one handed for Western Pleasure if they are over the age of five, and allow for either a snaffle, bosal or leverage bit for a junior Western Pleasure horse.

In APHA and AQHA you have to follow the rules for Western classes for barrels and pole bending, so that would eliminate the kimberwick once again. Costume class and flags would probably be okay, it would be up to the show's discretion.

Good luck in finding a bit that works well and suits your horse. My horses often find a kimberwick so similiar to a low port curb that switching over from one to the other is easy, but if your horse doesn't neck rein things will be a bit more difficult!

Kimberwicks are legal for open shows, but they are english bits. You will not be able to use it for western pleasure. I do not believe you will be allowed to use it in barrels or flags, but I am not entirly sure, try asking the shows orginization what bits are allowed for speed events... For the costume class, I'm guessing you would be fine using a kimberwick, but you should really use a bit that is appropriate for the discipline you ride.
