Is it legal for a minor in California to handle/ride/show stallions2007-11-24 21:17:58

I'm a working student for a lady who owns four Holsteiner stallions, and I was wondering if it's legal for me ride/show them (dressage).

I've contacted USDF several times, but they haven't emailed me back.

I think you have to be 18yrs in Ca. Because the Morgan horse shows you have to be 18yrs to show a stallion.

It depends on the associations, and what their rules say. More than likely the age is 18 for insurance purposes and the liability.

i think its up to the place where you show at so i would ask them, if youre like 13 and under or something though probably not

I'm not sure about dressage, but in jumping class it can be completely open. I have seen a 17 year old girl teen beat one of the top riders on the west cost, this was 1996 and the rules could have changed.

Most horse shows do not allow minors to handle or ride stallions on show grounds. Safety reasons being number one. I do not know off hand what the AHSA rules are, but you could probably bet you need to 18. If you are looking into showing these horses at a specific show - call the show secretary and ask.

USEF (the new name of the AHSA) does not allow junior riders to show stallions in dressage, hunters and equitation but they are allowed in Jumpers... BUT under junior riders still can't show a pony stallion (except in welsh classes). Breed divisions usually allow it (welsh, arab, connemara etc) and I believe eventing does, but thats it.

I don't think there are laws about juniors handling stallions though... and these are at USEF sanctioned shows-- there are unrated shows that make their own rules.

Most breed associations have their own rules for reg. shows. Most open shows do not allow it. The Arabian association. does allow this because they have that much faith in their breed.
