Is it legal to own one of those miniature ponies if you are a New York City resident2007-11-24 21:17:59

I know there are rules against wild animals but do they apply city wide? Are the mini horses included? I have seen dogs bigger than that...

Answers:

for starters, it is recognized completely as a domesticated animal, im noth shure, check with your city council. in most cities people are allowed to, but it depends on where their house is, how much prop they own n if the live in the right city water pipeline zone

Well, a pony isn't really a wild animal...XD

However, you must take into consideration that a horse, however small, is much different than taking care of a common pet like a large dog.

Mini horses have more complicated needs. They need land to graze on, or you need to find a place to stable them in. They need a farrier (to trim their hooves), and a lot more vet care than a common pet, as well as a lot of training aids such as halters, lead ropes, grooming supplies, ect.

Anyway, I don't know about NYC laws, but I just thought you should take that into consideration before getting a mini.

I'm not sure if it's ilegal, but I know it's a bad idea.

Where are you going to take care of a mini in new york city?

The law comes down to the equine federation, you must have at least a certain amount of acres for the first horse then an addition acre per horse no matter what breed.
I saw a documentary on Animal Planet about how blind people are switching to using miniature horses as guide animals rather than dogs. They are doing it because the minis live longer than the average seeing eye dog. So certainly some people can keep them in the city, but I don't know if the rules extend past people with special needs.
As a former NYC resident for a long time, if you can get it into the elevator and your doorman doesn't mind, then its okay. You will probably have to treat it like a dog, license and such. You will also have to obey litter laws, picking up after your pony as you would a dog. If you live in the city, you know what sticklers they are about this.

Apart from the legality of New York horses are rural animals and you must have land for them. Generally it is one acre per horse. Unless you are a bum in Central Park, unlikely due to your computer use, you may not be able to. That having been said, Claremont Riding Academy operated since the late 1800's with nearly 50 horses and closed only a month ago or so. The horses lived in a high rise, used ramps and were worked in Central Park. You can investigate the legality by asking in reference to that stable.
