Is it safe to get a heat shot for my mare that just came out of a heat2007-11-24 21:18:04

I just missed my mare's foal heat and need to get her breed soon (don't what a summer foal next year). Should I get the shot that puts her into heat or should I wait 21 more days?

Answers:

Many vets and breeders are in favor of the shot given after the horse's foal heat. They feel that it avoids the problems of breeding your mare so quickly after they foal, and increasing the risk of injury to their peri area plus infection, and yet you can still keep your future foaling date current.

I would speak to an equine vet that you trust and get their opinion. Obviously it won't be the end of the world if you mare waits another 21 days to come back into heat, so you shouldn't have problems going either way. Its a case of weighing the pros and cons and then going from there. But as there are very few risks to the shot, I think its a viable option for you.

Good luck and enjoy your horses!

Ask a veternarian. Don't look for this kind of advice on petqna.com , very few people here have ever worked with horses and even fewer will know anything about equestrian sexuality. It depends on your horse, go ask a vet.
I would talk to your vet because it really depends on the health of your mare-- It would probably be best to wait another 21 days but thats just my opinion... It will be more natural that way anyways and better for everyone... But i'm not a certified vet!
If it were me i'd wait for here to cycle again there's no gaurentees with those shots. Good luck 21more days isn't going to make that big of a difference anyway.
