Is my horse in heat2007-11-24 21:18:07

Hi,my mare has been acting i litttle different laty. First her stall smells bad, she freaks out if my gelding in not in the padock, and when i walk beside the fence she come up the me and start licking me? and she did not like me brushing her tall.

Answers:

It is possible she may be in heat, how old is she?...some signs of heat are lifting the tail and peeing a little bit of cloudy urine, rappied winking of the vulva, walking a little stiffer in the hind end after doing this with the tail cocked to one side briefly. the licking you, may just mean she needs a new salt block and horses are heard animals so she may be experiencing a little bit of heard loss and need his companionship even if its just that she can see him from across the yard...or she may be getting a little buddy sour.

Those are not all necessarily sign of being in heat... but every horse is differant. Some sign will be that she is cranky, irritable, with anything around the stomach, or just more cranky than normal...just like us females. IF you can lift her tail and look her vagina will be more swollen and she will bleed like us.

How old is she, if this is not normal in heat behavior for her, then it is probably something else.

Oh yes! She is definitely in heat. She wants more attention and her stall smells bad. If it has been going on for about a week it should be done very soon. Horses go into heat about once a month and it normally only lasts for about 3-7 days. If it has been going on longer I'd have a vet come out, especially since you said her stall smells bad.
