Is my horse in heat

Is my horse in heat2007-11-24 21:18:07

Hi,my mare has been acting i litttle different laty. First her stall smells bad, she freaks out if my gelding in not in the padock, and when i walk beside the fence she come up the me and start licking me? and she did not like me brushing her tall.

Answers:

Mares in heat will squat and urinate and in general act ready to breed when presented with a male horse. If your gelding is "macho," you can tease her with him and see if she responds. or you may know of someone with a stud.

With the smell and the not liking her tail messed with, it could be that she has some type of infection: be it urinary or vaginal.

The licking could be a mineral deficiency--does she have a mineral block she has access to?

Freaking out over the gelding is simply a sign that she's becoming "herd bound." That's a tricky behavior to break.

How long has it been since she was last in heat? Was it normal?

How long since she's had a good going-over by the vet? Perhaps it's time to call him or her.

no your horse is not in heat
If she is in season she will be more likely to be "winking" with her vulva. Usually facing her rear towards another horse, yes even another mare at times.
You mean is your MARE in heat? If she didn't like you brushing her tail, she is NOT in heat. A mare that is NOT in heat doesn't like anything near her tail and might even kick!
First, I want to say that my show mare is totally fine when I brush her tail. She is no better or no worse when she is in heat. I can apply spray, a fake tail, anything and she doesn't fuss, so I don't think you can generalize and say that mares who aren't in heat won't let you brush their tails! I know some geldings that don't like their tails brushed either, it is more a training issue than anything.
