Is rye grass Lawn seed ok to use for horse pasture
The girl i share my paddock with has decided to just go and by a kmart brand rye grass lawn seed and throw it all over our paddock. I dont think it is safe to use normal lawn seed for pasture, is it?

I know that horses can EAT the regular lawn grass but the seeds may be harmful if eaten-- Seeds bought should be horse safe, unless you are going to completely rope off the pasture and wait for it to grow all the way. Plus-- plain rye grass doesnt offer the nutrition that most mixed offer.
GO to the local tack/feed store and ask them to help you guys choose a good grass seed next time and im sure they can help you out =)

You also need to be aware of certain grass types if you are breeding your horses. Some are beneficial while others can do harm. One example is fescue, which can toughen the birth sac and can cause the foal to suffocate. Friends and family members have lost foals because their mares were feed fescue hay or were on bad pastures. The best pasture mix for horses is Red top, and lespediza. Alfalfa is good too.
