Is she to fat
Is she to fat2007-11-24 21:18:08
Ok i have a 5yr. old mare app./paint. She is 14.3 hands high. Anyway i think shes getting kinda fat but my mom doesnt. She weighs 934 (i think) or around there. Is that to fat for a horse her size?
She is out in the pasture 24/7. So what can i do to bring her weight down?
Answers:The mare is too fat - the evidence is in her cresty neck and it does look like her hooves are a bit concave and ringed. She needs to be taken off pasture and dry lotted with grass hay. She does not need grain. Is she tender footed? If so, that could be early stages of founder. She needs a trim pretty bad either way, to get ahead of the cracks starting in her front hoof. To bring her weight down, get her off the grass, and start riding her more.
If she is out in a grass pasture and she is prone to gaining weight then she will continue to gain weight beings theres food out there for her to eat. Now if she was in a dirt pasture like a small arena then you decide on what she eats and doesnt eat. thats the only way you can keep her weight down. As for her being to fat I cant look at her. Some horses are stocky and need a little more weight to look normal other horses are fined boned and weigh less and they can be the same height. As for a pasture horse its good for them to be a lttle heavier than lets say than a show horse due to the fact that they sleep outside and dont wear a blanket at night. So they need the extra weight and hair to keep them warm at night.
