Is there a horse food additive to prevent horse flies2007-11-24 21:18:10

Has anyone found a horse food supplement that helps prevent the hatching and growth of baby flies in the horse's manure? There used to be one on the market back in the late '80's, but I can no longer find it.

If there is one, where can I get some? Do you have an internet link to the website?

Also, does garlic really work to help keep the flies/mosquitos/ and ticks from the horse as some stores claim?

Answers:

I use Solitude IGR and really like it, makes a big difference in the fly population. Been using it for the past few years and will use it forever. One small scoop in their feed once a day.

It's made by Phizer http://www.pfizerah.com/product_overview... this is a site to look at the products info.

I have found the least expensive site to buy it from is http://www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.html?... and certain time if you check back on the Phizer website you can get a rebate. I like this product because it is safe for horses even breeding horses and foals.

Garlic does work believe or not.
This is a link that has 3 different brands of the feed thru fly control.

Karosene and vegetable oil works well for horse spray.not for eating though.
garlic does work.. for fly repellents from the inside out!! also, sprinkle some garlic powder in your horses' stall to repel flies and all flying insects.
Cheval makes a product called Inside Out which is make from apple cider vinegar, garlic, and brewers yeast. I think it helps keep the bugs away from the horse (we had a couple of boarders who had their horses on it). I took the cheaper route with my horse and simply bought the ingredients myself (use odorless garlic though, unless you want your barn to smell like an Italian restaurant!) The brewers yeast is also good for the coat.
Yes, there are insect growth regulators that are a feed through that work. I used these for some time but it still doesn't stop flies from breeding and hatching, only from breeding and hatching in manure. That, with fly spray, and other contols you can reduce the population of flies a bit.

I switched to fly predators a few years ago and have been much happier with the results. No flies hatching anywhere and a tremendous reduction in fly population across my property.
