Is there any way other than padding to help saddle sores2007-11-24 21:18:13

I have a horse that I am riding that has sores on her back. They are old and very obviously still bother her. I am using a lot of padding now, a saddle pad and a fleece, but I just feel so badly for her that I was wondering if anyone here had any other advice, remedies or any way to help her to be more comfortable.

Answers:

You said that these OLD sores bother her in the saddling process.

If they are in deed completely healed and you've confirmed this with your vet, then it may not be pain that is bothering her. I MAY in FACT be the memory of the saddle hurting back before the sores were completely healed. This could possibly point to a behavioral problem.

If this is in deed the case, then you need to do just exactly what you're doing. Use a bit of extra padding .as long as it takes the pressure from the saddle off the areas that had the sores. Practice with her by GENTLY saddling her several times a day until she gets the clue that it isn't going to hurt any more. Then she'll relax and any left over discomfort from anxiety of the expectation of the saddle causing pain should subside as she relaxes more and more.

I hope this helps. Good Luck!

give her a massage to untense the muscles - i find our horses love it all over their back and even down the neck- we just use an electric massager from ?bedbathandbeyond..
Stop riding her until she is all healed!! You riding her is not letting her sores heal! What is causing her sores?? Does the saddle fit right??
