Is there something wrong with my horse2007-11-24 21:18:15

My 12 yr old Appy gelding has been drooling very badly for a couple days now. I've found pools of his spit where he has standing all around his pen. Today a bloody spitball the size of a golfball came out of his mouth and after i rode him i found bloody chunk things on his bit. There is no clover in his pen or in his hay, so i know that's not the cause of his profuse drooling. Other than the drooling he acts and looks very healthy. What could be wrong with him? Could it be serious? Should i get the vet out to look at him?

This could be a very very serious problem or maybe not at all but it sounds bad-- blood coming out of the mouth could be a respitory problem, poisoning, something lodged in the throat causing irriation, tooth irritation (recent dental work) or a number of other things. Either way we are NOT vets and cant diagnose this-- but i can tell you that none of those i listed above are good things. DONT RIDE YOUR HORSE and keep him in his stall for the next few days.

I'd call a vet out RIGHT away-- meaning like NOW.

Call the vet. Sounds like he has something foreign stuck in his mouth that is irritating him.

This could be very serious. Since he is not a very young horse he could have a dangerous disease. It might cost alot but you need to get him checked out by the vet.

It may be, what I hate to say, something like there was a "needle in a haystack". Something very sharp, like a needle, may have gotten in and cut his intestines or something. I would say get a vet to help him out.
