Is there something wrong with my pony2007-11-24 21:18:15

my pony keeps haveing a runny and snooty nose is there something wrong with him.And anouther question i got my pony when he was 2 he is now 3 and he is going to be losing his teeth does he still need to have the detist look at his teeth.

First way to evaluate if he is sick is take his temp a couple of times per day over the next few days and see how much it fluctuates and if it is elavated. If the color of the snot is yellow or green and thick, that's not a good sign either and could be symptoms of rhino or even strangles. Dental problems as well can cause sinus infections which will lead to snotty noses.

His teeth should be worked on at least once per year, twice is better and before he gets bitted for the first time as they can work on the teeth so that the bit will sit better. We used to get the polo ponies done at the start of each season and whenever we changed bits, for example from a pelham to a gag.

If what is coming out of his nose is clear, then it's probably okay. If it starts to get yellow or green or gray or really thick, then you might have a problem.

Once all his teeth come in you probably don't need to have them checked as frequently unless he starts having trouble eating. Having a vet check to see if the teeth need to be floated every now and then is a good idea, and it's cheaper to have them floated as necessary than wait until he has a problem.

Snotty noses can just be allergies, or something more serious. I would say track the symptoms and see whats going on. We had an extremely snotty pony and she ended up having phnemonia, so if it's sever and affecting your pony very negatively, then I suggest you call out the vet.
