Is there something wrong with the mare
My horse trainer has this mare, who's pregnant. So far she is 3 days past her due date. This is her first pregnancy. She had a drop of milk on her leg 2 weeks ago, but that's it, and my horse trainer's been checking on her every 1/2 hour. Is there something wrong with her or the baby?
Answers:probably not. It is very common for mares, especially ones with first babies, to foal late. depending on the mare, they can get milk anytime, from months to the day before. A good sign of when a mare is ready to foal is when she waxes (i.e. develops a waxy cap on the end of her teat) that usually means she will be foaling within the next 48 hours. However not all mares wax. If your trainer is really concerned she should call the vet.
I would call the vet ASAP, for her/his opinion.
It's common for any female to give birth before or after the due date. But, animals can't talk to us and we only have signs (like dripping milk) to guess their needs.
What do you think we are - psychic? If she suspects a problem, I'm sure she knows to call a vet.
Why do you ask unqualified strangers who have never seen the mare, let alone examined her?
Not necessarily. Mares can carry up to two weeks late without there being call for concern. It sounds like your trainer is keeping a close watch on her. With this being her first pregnancy though your trainer would be wise to have a vet examine the mare, just to make sure there are no complications.
A pony mare at my barn was moved to us for foaling, a week before her due date, she foaled a week and 2 days late.
my mare carried 3 weeks past her due date your trainer is keeping a close on on her sounds like she will be ok as long as your trainer has experience
most likely there is nothing wrong its ok 4 the horse to be a little over due my mare was almost a week overdue and the baby and mare turned out fine
She will foal when she is ready. In the meantime, have a vet come out and look at her for peace of mind.
We had a mare like that. We called the vet and he said that he had a mare that had her baby three months late and it was healthy. So we waited and then the mare went into heat. We were amazed cuz she had already gotten her milk and was sleeping on her side and everything but when she went into heat and it had already been two weeks after the due date, we found out that te baby had died inside the stomach. Call the vet and make him come out to get an ultrasound, our vet didnt want to come out and see our mare and we made the mistake of not makign him.
Good Luck
