Is this too much riding for my 2 year old horse2007-11-24 21:18:17

I ride him 5-6 days a week 30-45mins a day with walk and some trot. His knees aren't closed and he is 3/4ths shire. Is this too much riding if so how much is ok?

Answers:

I wouldn't ride him personally. I understand he is 3/4's Shire but, that means he is larger, so, in essense, it doesn't make too much of a different. Larger horse = more body weight. Same as riding a 2 year old Quarter horse smaller build = less body weight. Thoroughbreds are raced at 2 year old colts, which I can only imagine their knees aren't closed up. But their racing career only takes up the first few years of their life. I wouldn't stop riding him alltogether, but cut down on it a little. Let him be a frisky little horse and not have to worry about pleasing a rider :)

It's not too much... when you do ride, walk him, just so that when you get to the trotting later on, he will be easier to control. just make sure that when you are done to cool him down a good 5 minutes maybe even 10 if he is breathing hard.
I think that is too much, especially if his knees havent closed yet. I would wait to ride him and ride him at a walk until his knees have closed all the way. His bones and joints are still growing, so it would be best to wait.
Honestly i'd knock off some. 2-3 times a week for that long is plenty. Thats the problem with the majority of the horses when they get old is that they had too much done with them too soon.
Larger horses take longer to mature. Most people do not advocate breaking a horse to ride until he is 3 years old (or even 4.)
