Listerine

Listerine2007-11-24 21:18:23

I have seen that some horse owners use Listerine for their horses. What do you use it for? In South Africa, Listerine is a mouth wash. Is this the same product you are talking about.

Answers:

Listerine can be used as a leg sweat when mixed with glycerin however extreme caution should be used since too much Listerine can actually cause irritation to the skin and it is unwise to apply if the skin has even the slightest cut or opening. Other products which can be used in sweats/baths such as bigeloil, absorbine, vetrolin, again the should be used in minute amounts as they can have a burning effect as well. At the track we used to use a an alcohol wash after horses breezed or raced on hot days. 1 pint of alcohol to about 3 gallons of water and never with a sponge that went on the face since alcohol stings the eyes. When it came to sweats we mostly used straight furacin which was antiseptic. That was applied directly to leg, then a piece of sheet cotton, they sheet of plastic wrap and the the normal standing bandage. Or course it is important to know how to correctly apply the bandage in order to not harm the leg. Hope this helps

Listerine (has antiseptic qualities) helps remove dandruff in the horse's mane/tail. I've never really had to do this, but I have heard it's an effective remedy.

Yes, it's the same product. :-)

It is mainly for horses that have sensitive or dry skin. You usually wash the horse w/bar soap and the use the listerine and have the horse dry in the shade. (Use can you it for the main and tail)
It is also used as a liniment/rub for cooling a hot horse or bracing the legs. Very similar to Absorbine.
Listerine works great on "rain rot" girth itch and similar fungal skin problems, as well as the dandruff issues mentioned, however I have found that due to the high alcohol content, it's best to know what is causing the dandruff. Dermatitus? Use Listerine. And, yes, it is the mouthwash!
The only time I have ever used Listerine was for rain rot. It was a harness horse who was horridly fat. I disinfected her back multiple times and also the saddle of the harness and it never did actually take care of it.
