Mane Pulling

Mane Pulling2007-11-24 21:18:23

My geldings forelock was really annoying him cause it was so long and kept getting in his eyes, so I took the scissors and did a little (and i mean little) snip. I walked away and my mum came up to me and said that he looked chinese (I guess cause of his almond shaped eyes) and now I dont know how to fix it. I didnt cut his mane so theres no worries there. Should I pull his forelock, and if so, how do you pull it? I've never had to pull before and am clueless as to what to do. Can I just use a regular mane comb or do I have to buy a pulling comb (if there is such a thing) haha it must of looked horrid cause the rest of the horses didnt come near him for a while so I braided his forelock for now. Any suggestions or ideas? I've learned now that I cant cut forelocks and there has to be an easier way to keep his forelock out of his eyes. Also, my gelding is a bay, but his tail is black and silver almost like he's old. Has this happened to your horse? Thanxs

Answers:

You can use a strong pulling comb or any other object that you can grab hold of hairs with. Even using a pair of rough suede gloves to grab hold of hairs will work. If you need to thin it too then the suede gloves will work good.

You also can use a clipper blade and basically feather the hair like a hair salon would do yours. Make the center longer than the sides, and just hold the hair in one hand and the blade (not on the clippers) in the other hand. Then feather the hair by pulling the sharp side of the blade down the hair until it cuts through it. You can also back comb the hair with the blade and only cut a little of it.
