Mare in labor now help2007-11-24 21:18:23

people say that horses in the first stage of labor will eat alot. will a mare stop eating when it is close to the water breaking

Answers:

They just get restless, may lay down and get up a lot, pace the stall etc. Most mares will foal at night.

yes,it is also best to leave the mare alone in labor unless she has help.i have 2 geldings and 2mares
First of all, congratulations! Foaling season is my favorite time of year and there is no sweeter scene than the birth of an equine!

Near foaling, you will see a lot of walking, eating, pooping, rubbing her butt. She is restless - this is completely normal.

She knows the drill - and when it is time... yes, she will stop eating... and you'll have a brand new angel.

Congrats!

Hi! One of the first signs of impending labor is the teats will begin to wax and your mare will get restless. She may eat or not, but typically they do not. She may appear moody if this is her first and she is clueless about what is happening. As the foal goes into transition, she will feel the movement and the bearing down or the labor muscles. So she needs water, a large stall and clean bedding to get ready. Typically she may get up and down a few times, but once she is in full labor she will go down. You can help her by being calm and petting her and make sure you keep the Vet informed of every step. If this is your first, make sure you have someone with you if you can and the Vet on speed dial if your mare needs help. If you have any other questions, please ask. Marie
Yes, when they are close to foaling, obviously you know that their teats wax up and may drip milk, they will not eat, but like Lisa M. said, get somewhat restless, lay down, get up, and want to be left alone. It's their way of nesting! Make sure the mare is in a secluded covered area, with no noise, and plenty of fresh straw to lay on, and fresh water. Most mares foal between midnight and 5 AM. Good luck! :^)
