Mare will not stop being agressive to other horses2007-11-24 21:18:24

We have a Tennessee walking horse mare who is VERY aggressive to the two other horses we own, Tonight we went to feed the horses and found a very nasty wound on our drum horse filly's rump. She had nipped here and there but she seems to be getting increasingly aggressive. If we don't figure out what to do other than seperateing them we are going to sell the walking horse mare as we cant have a trail horse attacking show horses.

I have heard excellent results with shock collars on these types of problems.

What would you rather have a ripped up horse, or a horse that has learned to leave the others alone?

Multiple ppl I know have used them especially when introducing them into a herd situation and have had very little aggressiveness shown even after removal of the collar.

Other than that, hobbling the snot mare and leave her in hobbles. It prevents her getting to the other horses at a high rate of speed.

Separate them. The walking horse is trying to bite her way to the top of the food chain and is apparently suceeding. Some horses are just nasty toward other horses and until they figure out their own heirarchy they are going to fight.

The best way to keep the peace, if you don't want to sell the mare, is to move her to a different pen. There, she will have no competition for food and should be content. Aggression between animals, particulary mares is normal as it is their way of establishing order in the group. As long as she is not aggressive toward people, then you don't have much to worry about. Moving the mare is your simplest way of fixing the problem as she will then be in a group of one, with no competition for food or water.

perhaps, she is pregnant. Also you might want to check her for scars or other types of wounds, perhaps she was TURNED aggressive. Of course I'm no veterinarian, so you might want to check with one of them.
Coud be hormonal, we had a hunter that would have hissy fits all the time if she wasn't on Regumate. I'd check with your vet especially if this is something that started recently and is escalating.
The mare needs to be checked for hormone issues. If her ovaries aren't working properly, she can become very aggressive and nasty. There's meds for this and she'd be a new mare in no time. If her homone levels are fine, and you don't have a place to keep her separate, a new home sounds best.
she's the alpha female. the lead female. the others are testin their place among the 'herd' and the mare is just showin them who is boss. they will eventually understand that she is the boss, and they are subordinate. my uncle's arabian did that 2 a mustang, and after the mustang understood that she was the leader, she quit testin her limits. hope tthat helps. just herd instincts
