I know that between 5 and 7 days later mares usually come into foal heat, but how long does it last? I know that breedings during foal heats have lower conception rates, so even though my mare is nursing a foal can she actually come into heat again (after the foal heat) ? My mare delivered june 30, and is in her 3rd day of foal heat and not too particlarly interested in my stud, if she does not get covered on this heat, is it true she can come into heat again? Someone said that 30 days later they have another cycle, I thought nursing had a contraceptive effect and the only chance to breed her before weaning the colt was during foa heat. any help would be appreciated. If we cannot breed her back this week I wold like to know if we have another chance in 30 days. I have been breeding minis for years, and have never bred a mare during a foal heat have always waited till after weaning, but this colt came late and we really want her bred back 4 next year.

I have never not had a mare that wouldn't continue to come into heat while nursing a foal. You can breed them on their foal heat if they have had a normal delivery. If your mare isn't already with the stud and you hand cover your mares then put the foal in a safe place. If she doesn't act interested in the stud it could be that she is worried about her foal. Perhaps she is a first time mother. If I don't have a box stall for the foal then I put them in a round corral and have someone hold the baby and then I hand cover the mare on the outside of the round pen. If I don't have that extra person I haven't ever had a problem with the foal being on the other side of the solid walled round pen fence.
