Me and my horse were just in our first horse show2007-11-24 21:18:25

We both did really good, I am 12 and she is 7. We only went in 2 classes to make it less stressfull. The first class was showmanship and the second was registered QH halter. In halter the judge took almost an hour in line-up because there were lots of good looking horses. Annie (my mare) did really good and stood still but she layed her head on my shoulder. I just snapped her with the lead rope but when i did that she moved! What should i do next time?

Answers:

i would practice at home her not touching you. at home you can "get after her" and it wont matter if she moves. i would carry a whip and tap her with it on the nose if she touches you while lined up. soon enough she will understand that she can touch you unless you say she can. good luck

Practicing will help reduce stress on you and on your horse. Take some time each day, and work on her set up and having her stand still. Also, don't panic if she moves a little, just take your time and get her set back up. The more you work with her the faster she will set back up for you.

Also, make sure you are standing in the correct position when you are in the class. If you are in the correct position, it should be pretty difficult for your horse to lay its head on your shoulder.

I have been with horses my entire life. Started showing at barn shows when I was 5. At the age of 13 I did what you did 2 weeks ago . You should push the head a way I should of did that.
