Miniature horse wont lunge2007-11-24 21:18:26

Hi,

I have some experience with training horses and have done lunge work in the past.

A friend of mine has offered to let me use her mini as somewhat of a project. (He is a seven year old gelding, so far just done leading with kids on his back - my friend would like her daughter to be able to ride by herself with bridle, etc.)

When I try to lunge him he'll stop and face me, or he'll turn his back to me.

It seems that no matter how I position my body, he moves in such a way so that he is immediately in front of me.

Any tips?

Are minitures different to train than a regular sized horse?

Thanks!

No minis aren't different, they are just fun size ;)

First, do you have a lunge whip. If the mini turns his rump to you, that is an instant pop from a whip on the rump. Never should they ever turn their backside to you. Horse, mini or mule.

If he stops and faces you, use your whip and smack the ground and ask him to continue, if he refuses, thats an instant pop also.

He has to learn your commands and it sounds like he isn't understanding them. To help him by using your whip, will show him what you mean. I'm not talking about whacking him either, just a tap.

hi. i had the same problem with my 2 yo QH. i went on the internet and found a great site by Cherry Hill. It has an article about problems with lungeing. she states that you start out with the horse facing you. you step to the side and start tapping the whithers with a whip, but not hard and not too soft. just enough to annoy the horse(pony). Eventually he will step out to the side to try to get away from that annoying tapping.as soon as he moves, stop the tapping, but ONLY if he steps sideways. keep tapping if he moves forward, backward or towards you. once he moves out, praise him. then start the tapping again, but keep it going with you positioned about a step away from your original position. repeat this process untill he is at the distance you want him to be at. You can then try to lunge him, but if he tries to come into you, stop and repeat the process. eventually he will get the point and realize that if he steps out and sideways, the tapping will stop. I hope i could be some help to you! This process really worked for me! If you want anymore info, i would suggest visiting the site of cherry hill. GOOD LUCK!!
well some horses just dont know how to lunge and you have to teach them
