My mare was always a bit moody. Not really bad just somewhat crankier. She's a tough old mare, 18 years. Is it normal for mares to get moodier as they get older?

Answers:

It is normal for them to get more sensitive as they get older, for whatever reason the females definitely seem to be more affected by this than males.

Just to be sure that her sudden onset of crankiness isn't caused by a health problem, the next time you're having the vet come, for vaccines or whatever, have him do a physical, just to make sure nothing's bothering her.

She may be starting to have wear and tear physically on her body and a vet may be able to recommend supplements that would suit her needs.

Yes and no. A lot of times once they get older people keep their routine the same. For example...if you have NOT changed her routine and you ride her every day...maybe she's moody because she's sore. She may just be feeling aches and pains all around and therefore is a little extra cranky.

Yes...if you know any female whether it be horse or human.we all get crankier as we get older. I'm really not kidding...it's just a mare "thing"

It sonds pretty normal, if her mood is a problem for you, you could try putting her on Regumate, it will regulate her hormones and make her more mellow, and less "mareish".
