More bit problems and concernsexperienced, accomplished horse people ONLY
I switched my 3 year old green broke western gelding from a full cheek snaffle to a wonder bit as some riders at my barn suggested. I think the wonder bit is a good bit in the right hands, but I don't compete or anything like that, I'm just a trail rider. I am beginning to worry that the wonder bit is too much in my young horse's mouth and I DO NOT want a hard mouthed horse or to cause him pain. I don't seem to have enough stopping power with the snaffle though, he stops on a dime when I say WHOA or STAND, but with the snaffle alone, he ignores me (which I'm sure he is testing me as most 3 year olds do). Also, he is learning to neck rein right now. What is a nice gentle bit that would be good for general everyday riding? I would like to have him in a very mild curb bit since he will be neck reining.any suggestions? And please, don't just tell me I need to try something because it worked for your horse.I want suggestions that would be best suited for my situation. Thanks!
Answers:I really like Wonder Bits, but I think you're right. this is not the bit for you. It's really more of a bit for speed competition. It is normaly used by barrel racers, to get a good rate around the barrels because it encompases a snaffle, a gag, and a curb. But for just trail riding and a young horse. I don't really recomend it.
So... here's a few of my suggestions! (I have two 3 year olds right now. one sounds alot like yours)
