My horse is drooling profusely Vet saw her and didnt think anything of itanyone else have a clue
She started this drooling about a week ago and by the time the vet got here, she wasn't doing it anymore. According to vet, her teeth don't need floated, she's not running a temp, she didn't have ulcers or anything around her gums, and she didn't appear to be choking. We also walked the field and found no bad trees or plants.
I have 2 mares; they are out on pasture at night and in the barn during the day. One is perfectly fine, but the "drooler" does this every single morning. I mean, it just pours out of her mouth--even when she doesn't lick her lips. By about mid-afternoon, it stops.
I would love to switch vets, but unfortunately, I live in a small town and large animal vets are rare. Anyone have any clue what this could be?
Answers:Your mare sounds as though she has a whopping case of clover slobbers. Horses who eat a lot of red or purple clover will salivate a lot- it's a normal response to eating the plants, and it will go away on its own as the animal's system adjusts to it. Our horses ( we have 11 of them living on the farm at the moment) have this problem all the time now- it's nothing to panic about. It's also normal for horses who have this condition to stop salivating excessively after a certain point- ours do this as well. My mare had this problem last week, and she was just fine when I rode and worked with her. Being drooled on by your horse isn't much fun when it comes to stains on your clothes, but that's what they invented Tide for. Just make sure that your horses have plenty of clean water to drink- they will be thirsty from the salivation. Otherwise, relax and don't worry- your mare is fine. ( By the way, the horse who isn't drooling is probably not as sensitive to the clover as your mare is, which is why she hasn't been doing the same thing. ) Hope this helps !!
