My horse is lame2007-11-24 21:18:31

my horse sometimes goes lame at shows cause of her cronic thrush... the farrier said to give her bute so that we can show and she wont be sore or lame. where can i buy bute?? can i buy it online? what websites? thanks a ton!

Answers:

you can order bute from valley vet supply. also you need to make sure that the shows you are going to allow you to use bute to cover the horse being lame.

Just so you know bute is bad for their liver & kidneys!!! Putting bleach on thrush can help!! How can you show your horse knowing that she will be hurting evern if you drug her up??
A veterinarian can supply you with bute and instructions on when, how and how much to use. It is not a cure all and can actually cause damage if used improperly. Your horse should be checked to determine the cause of it's lameness. Good luck and happy riding!

You can use bute and still show if you declare that you are using it. But your horse will still be sore and lame, but just drugged into not feeling it. Which can cause more injury. All it says is that ribbons are more important than your horse. And it can cause stomach problem as mentioned before. Instead of worrying about how to get bute so you can show, have you ever thought about maybe either retiring this horse or trying to have this thrush problem corrected?
Bute, or Phenylbutazone as it is properly called, is a non-steroidal anti inflammatory drug, or NSAID, that must be dispensed by a licensed vet, as it requires a prescription. Bute is an excellent painkiller and anti inflammatory, but since it is also considered to be a masking agent, it is prohibited in large amounts by most of the entities that regulate shows and competitions.
